Architectural detailing always matters, being transformational by providing a level of design that helps convey a design language.
William Green Architects enjoy detailing our building designs providing another level of the architectural design language of the whole, connecting and reinforcing the design principles.
Good design detailing conveys a message of understanding for what it takes to create a deeply considered space. How does the floor connect to the wall, the floor run through an opening, or the balustrading work with the stair tread, for example? These connections are moments in the design, time to understand the materials and their innate language, which influences how the connections can be designed. The skill is referencing this back to the context of the overall design intent and forever linking them.
To consider the detail shows a depth of design that is often overlooked due to budget restraints and economies of thought.
At WGA our standard detail library is ever-growing, built through testing and measuring within the built environment. Every connection provides the opportunity to consider detail design and its influence upon the overall architecture. To see, feel and walk within this level of considered Architecture is a timelessly rewarding experience. Detailing, executed well, is visually appealing to all users and enhancing to the materials, aiding longevity, transcending fashion.
Detailing is subjective and influenced by the desired end result. Connections have a scale less quality that reflects the architecture, determined by the materials. Clean lines and precise shadow gaps are the result of careful design decisions distilled to their simplest form. Removing clutter and expressing unified connection. Constructing these details cleanly is a matter of careful consideration and understanding, all parties need to be invested in the architectural detail.
All of us at William Green Architects enjoy bringing this deep connected thought to our projects and having like-minded clients, who appreciate architecture and share these goals.
