Langston Farm
Langston Farm is in the Cotswolds village of Little Compton in Warwickshire. Our clients have owned the property for generations and they approached us to develop existing designs for a new farmhouse. The original house was practically destroyed after a devastating fire. They wanted their new farmhouse to match the traditional character of its predecessor but with distinctly modern elements, including our designs for a strikingly modern garden room.
The fire-damaged farmhouse was knocked down and replaced with a much larger main house that initially looks almost identical to its predecessor. Before demolition, we surveyed the remaining windows so exact replicas could be built and we sourced matching Cotswold stone.
The new house also incorporates striking, modern architecture in the form of large garden room on the site of the old tennis court. This distinctly contemporary space has poured concrete floors, a floating grass roof and three-metre high glass sliding doors on two sides overlooking an orchard. A bespoke two-sided fireplace can be enjoyed both inside the garden room and outside on the terrace. We’ve incorporated the original walls of the old tennis court into the garden room, providing a balance between the modern and the traditional.
The main house has a formal drawing room and other reception rooms, plus a home cinema. A series of family spaces includes a fantastic kitchen, a pantry and utility and substantial boot room. The layout has been arranged for optimal socialising and for modern family life, with beautiful interiors by our long-term collaborator, Lauren Gilberthorpe.
Unique design details include a secret door in the bookcase of the sitting room, finials on the staircase that were reclaimed from the old house and a grand central stair with a glass roof light.
Upstairs are five bedrooms, including a master suite with vaulted ceiling and a large stone bath on a raised plinth in a square bay window to maximise the view.
We have a great relationship with our client and we’re now working on designs for their indoor swimming pool pavilion.
